Because most people knew more about the Three Kingdoms from the novel
Romance of the Three Kingdoms rather than from the actual historical record,
Tsau Tsau was given a bad name. Most people have a poor impression of him,
and view him purely as an antagonist. But the real Tsau Tsau not only knew
about poetry, he was also a great military leader. Even Chuge Lieng said that
the way Tsau Tsau led his was army was like that of the famed tactician Sun Wu,
from the ancient kingdom of Wu, who wrote the famed book Sun Tzu Tactics. He
was a man who Napoleon admired, which in turn shows how skilled Tsau Tsau
actually was.
If it wasn't for his great loss to Chuge Lieng in the battle of Ch'ih Pi,
Tsau Tsau would have likely united all of China. When comparing the three
rulers, we can see that Sun Ch'üan acquired his position through inheritance
from his father, while Liu Pei acquired his mostly from luck. Only Tsau Tsau
got his, piece by piece, through his own hard work. He can't be matched by
the other two in terms of accomplishments. While Tsau Tsau was still young,
he visited Hsü Shao, a man known for his summation of others. Hsü Shao gave
him a positive summation, calling him, "A great official in times of peace,
a cunning hero in times of chaos."
Before Tung Cho was defeated, Tsau Tsau portrayed a favorable image. Not only
did he fight against the Yellow Turban bandits, but he also tried to assassinate
Tung Cho. In addition, he issued a letter to all of the lords of the land to
form an army to rescue the Emperor from Tung Cho. At this time, there was no
evidence that he would one day be called 'stealer of the kingdom'.
But once Tung Cho was defeated, it was clear that the royal family of Han
could no longer control the kingdom. The lords of the land no longer accepted
orders from the Emperor; all they did was fight amongst themselves to try and
gain more power. In such an age of chaos, people often lost control of themselves.
Tsau Tsau was no different, as he was absorbed into this whirlpool of history.
Despite being surrounded by many strong foes, he finally defeated Yuan Shao,
Lyu Bu, Yuan Shu, and many others, to unite northern China. After this, his
heart changed. Maybe it was because the power he gained corrupted him, or it
may have been that he realized the end of the Han Dynasty was irreversible.
The land was waiting for those who were capable, and so maybe it was Tsau Tsau's
destiny to be that man. Whatever the reason, he became more prideful and forceful
from that day forward. The 'cunning hero in times of chaos' had finally shown
his true self.
It is possible for any person to start losing, when their desires get the
best of them. Tsau Tsau, who was very self-confident, finally had a huge
pitfall at the hands of Sun Ch'üan and Liu Pei, who he once had thought of as
mere pests. His loss at Ch'ih Pi shook the foundation of his power, and for
the time being he no longer had the power to unite all of China. Therefore,
the stage of the Three Kingdoms was set.
