There's a tale behind the reason Syu Hwang joined Tsau Tsau's ranks. After
Tung Cho was assassinated, his minions scattered, though a few generals who
still had some military power occupied their own territories and fought with
each other. Kuo Fan and Lee Chüeh were two such examples. One of them captured
the Emperor, while the other took control over the nobles and officials. They
fought each other outside Ch'ang An city. Both of them completely disregarded
the Emperor Han Hsien, so a group of people still loyal to the Emperor came
to save him. They were led by Yeng Feng and Tung Ch'eng. Yeng Feng's main
general was Syu Hwang.
After a long battle, they finally rescued the Emperor and brought him back
to Luo Yeng city. However, Guo Fan and Lee Chüeh chased after them, arriving
at Luo Yeng as well. At this time, Tsau Tsau also hed his army to Luo Yeng
to save the Emperor. He successfully defeated the two rebellious generals,
making the Emperor quite happy. Thus, Tsau Tsau became close to the Emperor
and was highly trusted.
However, Tsau Tsau's actions infuriated Yeng Feng, who believed that Tsau Tsau
had stolen his reward for all the hard work he'd put into getting the Emperor
safely back to Luo Yeng. Thus when Tsau Tsau was on his way to move the
capital to Hsü Ch'ang, Yeng Feng ordered Syu Hwang to intercept him. Tsau Tsau
ordered Syu Ju to duel with Syu Hwang, but the result was a stalemate. Tsau Tsau
was surprised to see how good Syu Hwang was, so, looking for able men, immediately
ordered Man Chong to persuade Syu Hwang to join him. Finally, Man Chong was able
to make Syu Hwang surrender to Tsau Tsau. His betrayal caused severe damage
to Yeng Feng's military power. In the end, Tsau Tsau peacefully brought the Emperor to Hsü Ch'ang and manipulated
him in order to control the whole kingdom.
If it weren't for Syu Hwang's surrender to Tsau Tsau, Yeng Feng would have
used all the power he had to interfere with Tsau Tsau's plans. Then, Tsau Tsau
would not have been able to persuade the Emperor to change the location of the
capital, meaning he may not have gained all of his political power. So of course,
Syu Hwang's contribution to Tsau Tsau's success cannot be overlooked.
Later on, as Chuge Lieng waged his northern campaign, Syu Hwang was hit in the
head with an arrow shot by Meng Ta, and he died. He had lived to the age of
fifty-nine.
