In the past, Tsau Tsau had once failed to assassinate Tung Cho, so he returned home to regather his troops to try again. At this time, a pair of brothers from the same family tribe came and joined him. They were named Sya-Hou Chuen and Sya-Hou Yuan, and were actually true relatives of Tsau Tsau. Tsau Tsau's father was originally a man named Sya-Hou, who became an adopted son to an official named Tsau Teng. Because of this, both his name and Tsau Tsau's surname was changed to Tsau. In other words, Tsau Tsau's true surname was actually Sya-Hou.

When Tsau Tsau was in a stalemate with Lyu Bu, Sya-Hou Chuen commanded his troops to war. While they were traveling, they met with a surprised battle with Lyu Bu's frontline general, Kao Shun. Sya-Hou Chuen fought Kao Shun in a duel, and Kao Shun was no match for him. When Kao Shun ran from the fight, Sya-Hou Chuen chased after him. When Lyu Bu's army witnessed this, they fired arrows to help Kao Shun escape. One arrow, apparently, made its mark in Sya-Hou Chuen's left eye. After a painful scream, he quickly plucked out the arrow, but his eyeball came out along with it. Fighting the immense pain, he shouted, "Essence of my father, blood of my mother, I cannot throw this away!", before putting the eyeball in his mouth and swallowing it. Losing an eye did not affect Sya-Hou Chuen's fighting ability. Instead, it made him even better than before.

The Sya-Hou brothers were both formidable generals in numerous battles. Not only did they fight in the front lines, but they were also very loyal. However, both of them had more muscles than brains. When alone, they would often get careless at some point and lose the battle. Even though Tsau Tsau had a group full of powerful generals at his aid, he lacked generals that were both brave and intelligent. Maybe it was because of Tsau Tsau's own intelligence that the lack of brains among his subordinates did not undo him!
