When Tsau Tsau was defeated at Ch'ih Pi, he wanted to calm the northwest so that there wouldn't be any worry when he wasn't around. To do so, he would have to get rid of Ma Teng. So Tsau Tsau issued a fake royal decree to order Ma Teng to wage war against Sun Ch'üan. He set a trap in the middle of Ma Teng's journey to the capital, and assassinated him. Ma Teng's son, Ma Chau, heard of this, despite being far away. Greatly saddened and angered, he ordered his troops to march toward Ch'ang An, promising to avenge his father's death. Holding onto this grudge, he advanced without being defeated.

After conquering Ch'ang An pass and T'ung pass, he approached the capital. Tsau Tsau was forced to prepare his troops and stand against Ma Chau, but to his surprise, none of his generals were a match for Ma Chau. Even the best of them were defeated by Ma Chau. Realizing his victory, Ma Chau rushed into Tsau Tsau's ranks and tried to capture him. Tsau Tsau's army was unable to hold him off, so they retreated.

Tsau Tsau's appearance at the time was that of a man with a long beard wearing a red robe, so Ma Chau ordered his soldiers to slay anyone of that appearance. In order to escape, Tsau Tsau had to cut his beard and change his clothes. Though he escaped, it was the worst battle he had faced after his defeat at Ch'ih Pi.

Even though Ma Chau was a strong general, he did not pay much attention to tactical strategies. Despite winning a small battle against Tsau Tsau, he was still no match for Tsau Tsau's tactics, and as a result, eventually lost to him. Admitting defeat, he surrendered to Chang Lu at Han Chong. Though at this time, Liu Pei marched his troops into Hsi Ch'uan. The lord of the land, Liu Chang, sent a letter to Chang Lu to request his aid. Chang Lu ordered Ma Chau to lead the reinforcements. Chuge Lieng borrowed one of Tsau Tsau's old tactics, spreading false information, and Ma Chau lost Chang Lu's trust. This, coupled with the fact that his old territory was now in Tsau Tsau's hands, Ma Chau was forced to join Liu Pei's side.

Although he did not conquer any cities or lands while in Liu Pei's army, Ma Chau still had a very famous reputation around Hsi Lieng. Because of this, Chuge Lieng ordered him to guard the borders around Hsi Lieng to prevent an ambush from the Ch'iang Tribe. For the remainder of his life, none of the Ch'iang ever dared to cross the border. Thus, Ma Chau was considered one of Liu Pei's important subordinates.
