Tsau Tsau knew very well who he could entrust. All of his generals were
capable, especially his favorite general Dian Wei. Dian Wei was the captain
of his personal guards. This shows how much trust Tsau Tsau had in him.
One of the incidents Tsau Tsau regretted most in his entire life was when
Dian Wei finally died, trying to save him from an ambush.
One time, Tsau Tsau's army was unable to stand up to Lyu Bu's army, and was
surrounded by them. Tsau Tsau yelled for help, but it was only Dian Wei who
ran out to stand against the enemy. He grabbed many short crescent blades
and told his soldiers to tell him when the enemy was ten steps away. Then he
charged at the enemy. When his men yelled to him, he told them to yell again
once the enemy was five steps away. When he heard them once more, he threw
the crescent blades at the enemy. None of the blades missed; each one struck
and killed one of the enemies. Seeing this, the other pursuers became afraid
and retreated. Through this, we can see Dian Wei's bravery.
Dian Wei's death was entirely Tsau Tsau's fault. Originally, Chang Hsiu had
surrendered to Tsau Tsau, but Tsau Tsau committed adultery with his uncle's
wife, bringing great shame to him. Therefore, he plotted to kill Tsau Tsau to
save face. One night, he led his soldiers to Tsau Tsau's home, and invaded it.
Dian Wei, who was sleeping, heard the sounds of battle and immediately awoke.
However, he could not find his crescent blades so he grabbed a random blade
instead and ran to defend Tsau Tsau without even stopping to put on his armor.
After he had killed around twenty of the enemy soldiers, none of them dared
to get close to him. Instead, they fired arrows at him from afar. Though a
dozen of these arrows pierced his body, Dian Wei stood still in front of
Tsau Tsau's door and prevented anyone from harming his master. Finally, after
losing a massive amount of blood, Dian Wei roared several times before dying.
Even after he had taken his last breath, his enemies, shocked by his bravery,
dared not to get close to him. Thanks to Dian Wei's effort, Tsau Tsau was
given enough time to slip out the back door and escape.
The cause of this incident was Tsau Tsau's lust for women. Dian Wei, who had
nothing to do with Chang Hsiu's attack, sacrificed himself for Tsau Tsau. Really,
what had he done to deserve such a death?
